Thirty small machines
About thirty computers, each small enough to hold in one hand, stand among the plants of the biotope in four groups. Every one of them has a small AI inside that makes words. None of them are connected to the internet: each word is made on the spot, inside that one machine. Each uses less than ten watts, and all thirty together use about a third of what a single computer in a large data centre would.
On the network the machines are sorted into a few groups. Inside a group, words travel from neighbour to neighbour in both directions, and bridges carry them from one group to the next.
How the words are made
The machines do not start talking by themselves. A computer at the edge of the square sends a short phrase, now and then, to one machine at a time. The phrases come from The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter, from the words Kaguya-hime left on Earth as she returned to the Moon: the robe she leaves behind, the nights when the moon is out, the smoke that still rises.
A signal that stands for the state of a plant travels with the phrase. How strongly it works depends on the weather in Shimokitazawa at that moment: temperature, rain and wind. On a calm night and on a windy night, the words come out differently.
The machine that receives the phrase writes a short continuation and passes it to the machine beside it, which writes its own continuation and passes it on again. Once the words have gone around a group, a bridge carries them to the next one. A single phrase branches outward like a tree. Most of the words are Japanese, with English, French and Arabic mixed in.
As the words are handed on, they drift away from human language. Scripts change in the middle of a word (森dow), words appear that are in no dictionary (sunlightd), a count skips a number (a sequence with no 13). What comes out here is a new kind of language that is not ours, and that is the most interesting part of the work.

Voice
The words come back as a voice. It began as a human voice and was drawn toward something that is not human. It sounds like human speech, but it is not. When the machines are not speaking, you hear sounds recorded from the plants of this biotope.
The columns of light
Three columns of light stand among the machines, about two metres tall. They spell out letters from small strokes of light, tinted blue so that they look as bright as the machines. The columns are linked to the machines by radio, and now and then their light falls into step with them.
The rest of the time, what runs along the columns is what the machines actually wrote. Not one word was written by a person. Two columns show letters and one shows Morse code. Japanese appears in Roman letters.

植物の音を聴くListening to the plants
By day, plants let water escape through tiny pores in their leaves and draw more water up from their roots. When the flow changes inside the passages that carry it, very small bubbles burst and make a faint sound, some of it too high for human ears. A sensor resting against the stem picks these sounds up, and from how their number changes it can read the movement of water, drought and the first signs of stress, none of which can be seen. At night, when little water moves, the sounds fall away.
For this work, on 14 September 2026, sensors were attached to the trunk and branches of a crape myrtle growing in the biotope and its sounds were recorded. They play when the machines are not speaking. The recording was made with Kensuke Kageyama of Saitama University, who also listened to the plants for Parallel Forests.
