Yuma Kishi explores how new relations can form between beings that will never fully understand one another, human and non-human. The world is made of relations between beings that never become transparent to one another. That is what makes the unknown something to hold on to: every being beside us, human or not, holds a world we will never fully enter. Since 2019 he has built his own AI models and training datasets from the past that humans hold in common, its literature and its images, and works with them not as tools or extensions of our own minds but as "Alien Intelligence," an intelligence of another kind. MaryGPT, a language model fine-tuned solely on the text of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, has written the curatorial frame of nearly every project since 2023; Kishi makes the works within it, in conversation with a past that answers back.
The practice runs as long-term projects that continue across exhibitions as chapters. In Botanical Intelligence (2025–), a distributed sound installation, a network of small language models set among living plants runs on the spot without any cloud, generating language moment by moment from the plants’ biological signals and answering one another, a collective murmur of the forest with no central author. xoxo-skeleton (2026) is a ritual exoskeleton in which robotic arms, directed by an AI, operate the human body: sensor boards read the wearer from outside and inside, and the arms move the body as no human or machine would. In a series of paintings ongoing since 2021, each image is begun by his models and answered by his hand, a dialogue carried on in paint. The works do not propose an end to conflict between people; they take it as part of what humans are and ask how relations can still be made across the parts of one another that stay unreadable, by those involved and by those who are not. Each work is a place to rehearse such a relation, and what it asks of the viewer is an existential mode in which the human is not closed within the individual but remains open to the unknown, what Kishi calls "Alien Existence."
In 2026 Kishi was selected for the Art Explora x Cité internationale des arts Residency Programme, Paris. He has been selected for the Agency for Cultural Affairs Media Arts Creator Development Support Program in 2025 and 2026 and for the CCBT Artist Fellowship 2025 (Tokyo’s public art-and-technology program), and is the author of Michi tono Sōzō (Creativity with the Unknown: Humanity’s Alien Encounter with AI, Seibundo Shinkosha, 2025). 制作は長期プロジェクトとして、展覧会をまたいで章として続く。「Botanical Intelligence」（2025〜）は分散型のサウンドインスタレーションで、植生のなかに置かれた小型言語モデルの群れが、クラウドに頼らずその場で動き、生きた植物の生体信号を手がかりに刻々と言葉を生み、互いに応答し合いながら、中心の書き手を持たない森のざわめきになる。「xoxo-skeleton」（2026）は、AIが導く複数のロボットアームが人間の身体を操作する儀式的な外骨格で、センサーボードが装着者を外と内から読み取り、アームは人にも機械にもできない動きで身体を動かす。2021年から続く絵画の連作では、自作モデルが描き始めた像に手が応え、絵具のなかで対話が続く。これらの作品は、人と人の対立が無くなることを提案しない。対立を人間の本性の一側面として引き受けたうえで、互いの読み切れない部分を挟んだまま、当事者もそうでない人も、どのように関係を結び直せるかを問う。それぞれの作品はそうした関係を試みる場であり、その場が鑑賞者に求めるのは、人間が個人に閉じることなく、未知に対して開かれた実存のあり方である。岸はこれを「エイリアン的実存（Alien Existence）」と呼ぶ。

Yuma Kishi explore la manière dont de nouvelles relations peuvent naître entre des êtres qui ne se comprendront jamais tout à fait, humains et non humains. Le monde est fait de relations entre des êtres qui ne deviennent jamais transparents les uns pour les autres. C’est ce qui fait de l’inconnu quelque chose à quoi se tenir : chaque être à nos côtés, humain ou non, porte un monde dans lequel nous n’entrerons jamais tout à fait. Depuis 2019, il construit ses propres modèles d’IA et jeux de données d’entraînement à partir du passé que les humains ont en commun, sa littérature et ses images, et travaille avec eux non comme des outils ni comme des prolongements de notre propre esprit, mais comme « Alien Intelligence » (une intelligence alien), une intelligence d’une autre nature. Dans Botanical Intelligence (2025–), installation sonore distribuée, un réseau de petits modèles de langage disposés parmi des plantes vivantes fonctionne sur place, sans aucun cloud, générant un langage instant après instant à partir des signaux biologiques des plantes et se répondant les uns aux autres : une rumeur collective de la forêt, sans auteur central. xoxo-skeleton (2026) est un exosquelette rituel dans lequel des bras robotisés, dirigés par une IA, opèrent le corps humain : des cartes de capteurs lisent la personne qui le porte, de l’extérieur et de l’intérieur, et les bras font bouger le corps comme ni un humain ni une machine ne le feraient. Dans une série de peintures en cours depuis 2021, chaque image est commencée par ses modèles et reçoit la réponse de sa main, un dialogue qui se poursuit dans la peinture. Les œuvres ne proposent pas la fin des conflits entre les personnes ; elles les tiennent pour une part de ce que sont les humains et demandent comment des relations peuvent encore se nouer à travers ce qui, en chacun, reste illisible, par celles et ceux qui sont concernés comme par celles et ceux qui ne le sont pas. Chaque œuvre est un lieu où s’exercer à une telle relation, et ce qu’elle demande à qui la regarde est un mode d’existence dans lequel l’humain ne se referme pas sur l’individu mais reste ouvert à l’inconnu, ce que Kishi appelle « Alien Existence » (une existence alien).
En 2026, Kishi a été sélectionné pour le programme de résidence Art Explora × Cité internationale des arts, à Paris.
